EDITORS COMMENTS
In the midst of the chaos and upheaval of World War I, the traditional roles of women in society began to shift as they took on new responsibilities in the workforce. This charming illustration by Annie Fish, published in The Tatler in 1917, depicts Uncle Fred, a character from the "Letters of Eve" column, enjoying his time in the office amidst the influx of wartime clerical workers. The girls, dressed in their practical work attire, are busily typing letters and taking dictation, while Uncle Fred sits comfortably with one foot on a desk and a smug expression on his face. His chauvinistic behavior, once acceptable in the male-dominated workplace, now seems out of place as the women prove their competence and value in their new roles. The humorous cartoon serves as a reminder of the changing attitudes towards gender roles during the war, and the progress that was made towards greater gender equality in the workplace. Despite the inappropriate behavior of some men like Uncle Fred, women continued to make strides in employment opportunities, paving the way for a new era of gender dynamics in the office.
