EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Westland Wessex 60 series 1, G-ASWI (msn WA199, ex G-17-1), of Bristow Helicopters, as it stands proudly at Blackpool-Squire's Gate Airport in October 1974. The Westland Wessex, a versatile and iconic British helicopter, was a common sight in the skies during the 1970s. Unfortunately, this particular aircraft holds a tragic memory in the history of aviation. On August 11, 1975, G-ASWI disappeared during a flight from Humberside Airport to Blackpool, with 13 people on board. Among the fatalities were a neighbour of my parents and the parent of a schoolmate of mine. The loss of this helicopter was a profound shock to the local community, leaving a lasting impact. The Westland Wessex, with its distinctive shape and powerful presence, was a vital part of the transportation infrastructure during the 1970s. Its versatility made it an essential asset for various roles, including search and rescue, transport, and flight training. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a time when the Westland Wessex was a regular presence in the skies, and of the tragic events that unfolded when one such aircraft met with misfortune.
