Fighting the Films - The Shilling Theatre at Fulham

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Shilling Theatre in Fulham, London, opened its doors on January 14, 1933, with a grand mission to provide a thousand affordable seats for the public, priced at just a shilling (5p in today's currency). This photograph captures some of the key figures involved in bringing this ambitious project to life. Gabrielle Casartelli, Frank Dobson, Joy Vinogradoff, and Algernon Newton, ARA, are seen here among the founders and volunteers, working tirelessly to prepare the theatre for its opening. Dobson, a renowned sculptor, contributed his artistic skills to the project. Vinogradoff, an actress, brought her theatrical experience to the table, while Newton, an artist and art critic, lent his expertise and connections. The cast of performers included Robert Newton, Bennett O'Loghlan, Gabrielle Casartelli, Martin Walker, Roy Emerton, and Edwin Ellis, all of whom are seen rehearsing in this image. The group is hard at work, ensuring a polished performance for the theatre's eager audience. In this snapshot of the theatre's early days, we also see volunteers lending a hand in decorating the space. Algernon Newton, ARA, is seen chatting with John Strachey at the bar, while Joy Vinogradoff kneels down to paint the counter. Pauline Murray, daughter-in-law of Sir Gilbert and Lady Murray, is also seen giving the counter a fresh coat of paint. These photographs, taken by William Davis, offer a glimpse into the collaborative efforts of the Shilling Theatre's founders, volunteers, and performers, as they came together to create an alternative to the dominance of films in the entertainment industry.
