EDITORS COMMENTS
Peter II of Aragon, also known as Peter the Great or Peter the Cathedral-Builder, was born in Huesca, Aragon, in 1178, and ruled as King of Aragon and Count of Barcelona from 1196 until his death in 1213. This striking 19th-century print, held at the Museo Militar in Madrid, depicts Peter II on horseback, dressed in the regal attire of the Middle Ages. The image shows Peter II wearing a crown adorned with the Bars, the symbol of the House of Barcelona, and holding a lance in his right hand, while a shield bearing the Aragonese cross is secured to his horse. His helmet, with its distinctive nasal guard, and his armored chest and arms are typical of the armor used during this period. Peter II is renowned for his military prowess and his role in the Reconquista, the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors. He expanded the territories of Aragon and Catalonia, and his reign is marked by the construction of numerous churches and cathedrals, earning him the nickname 'the Cathedral-Builder.' This print, which has undergone later coloration, is an engraving that captures the essence of medieval monarchs and their grandeur. The image of Peter II on horseback, riding with determination and pride, is a testament to the rich history of Aragon and Catalonia during the Middle Ages.
