They initially sought refuge in the United Kingdom but were eventually granted asylum in the United States due to concerns over the safety of their children. The family lived in relative anonymity in New York, trying to maintain a sense of normalcy for their children amidst the chaos of wartime. The photograph shows the family in their modest apartment, with Crown Princess Martha holding her youngest daughter, Princess Astrid, while her eldest son, Prince Harald, looks on.
