EDITORS COMMENTS
Mrs Patrick Campbell, renounced actress of the late 19th century, is depicted in these four theatrical portraits taken during her acclaimed performance as Mrs Ebbsmith in The Notorious Mrs. Ebbsmith by Arthur Wing Pinero at the Garrick Theatre in 1895. In the first image, Campbell exudes a sense of determination and defiance with the quotation, "I am quite myself again, Lucas, dear." Her expressive eyes and confident posture convey the strength and resilience of her character. The second portrait captures the moment of high drama as Campbell rescues the Bible from the stove, with the captioned quote, "The rescue of the Bible from the stove." Her intense gaze and clenched fist convey the urgency and passion of the scene. In the third portrait, Campbell reflects on her past with the poignant quotation, "I've anathemised my womanhood often enough." Her somber expression and downturned gaze suggest a deep introspection and regret. Finally, in the fourth portrait, Campbell looks off into the distance with a wistful expression, reflecting on her future with the quote, "Lucas, dear, when I have learnt to pray again, I will remember you every day of my life." Her contemplative pose and serene expression hint at a newfound sense of peace and spiritual growth. Born Beatrice Rose Stella Tanner, also known as Mrs Pat, Campbell was a celebrated actress of her time, known for her performances in plays by Shakespeare, Shaw, and Barrie. The Notorious Mrs. Ebbsmith, first produced on 13 March 1895 at the Garrick Theatre, showcased Campbell's remarkable talent and versatility on the stage.
