EDITORS COMMENTS
This rare and poignant print captures a moment in history that was almost unheard of in British society - King Edward VII on his death bed in May 1910. While death-bed photographs were common on the Continent, they were considered taboo in Britain. However, Queen Alexandra, who hailed from Denmark, had a different perspective and allowed photographers W. & D. Downey to capture this intimate moment with her beloved husband.
King Edward VII, known for his affable personality and love of socializing, ruled as the seventh monarch of the United Kingdom from 1901 until his passing in 1910. Despite his larger-than-life persona during his reign, this photograph shows him vulnerable and at peace as he prepares to depart from this world.
The image serves as a reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of mortality even for those who hold positions of power and influence. It also offers a glimpse into the personal lives of royalty behind closed doors, showcasing their humanity amidst all the pomp and circumstance.
As we gaze upon this solemn portrait, we are reminded to cherish every moment we have with our loved ones and to reflect on the legacy that each individual leaves behind when they depart from this world.
