EDITORS COMMENTS
Amid the chaos and hardships of World War II, the NaFI Alexander Club in Rome, Italy, stood as a beacon of comfort and relaxation for Allied soldiers. Housed in a former department store, approximately the size of London's Selfridges, the club was named after General Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis, the Allied commander. The spacious interior featured a central, roofed atrium, where a tranquil oasis awaited weary soldiers. The floor of this open area was home to a shimmering pool filled with goldfish and a captivating fountain. These 'Snack Floors,' as they came to be known, offered a momentary escape from the rigors of war. Soldiers could unwind, socialize, and enjoy a hot meal or a refreshing beverage amid the lush greenery and soothing sounds of the water. The NaFI Alexander Club in Rome served as a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the Allied forces during World War II, providing a much-needed reprieve from the harsh realities of the battlefield.
