EDITORS COMMENTS
You know what men are. In previous wars, men generally had the desirable uniforms that captured the hearts of many. But in the midst of World War II, the ladies joined the fight, and their uniforms became a sight for sore eyes. Among the most attractive were those of the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRENs), affectionately known as "Wrens." This charming comic postcard from 1944, published by Valentine & Sons, Dundee, captures the essence of wartime humor. Three little girls, dressed in WREN attire, are shown chatting with a sailor, an airman, and a soldier. The artist, Mabel Lucie Attwell, masterfully caricatures the innocence and playful nature of childhood amidst the chaos of war. The cute kids, with their rosy cheeks and mischievous grins, add a light-hearted touch to the seriousness of the time. This postcard is a testament to the resilience and spirit of the people during the 2nd World War, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, there is always room for a little fun and amusement.
