This handcoloured steel engraving depicts the majestic and endangered Tigers, Panthera tigris, in their natural habitat. Tigers are the largest of all big cats and are native to Asia. Unfortunately, these magnificent creatures are currently facing extinction due to various threats such as poaching for their fur, bones, and other body parts, habitat loss, and fragmentation. Tigers require large territories to survive, and as human populations expand and encroach upon their habitats, tiger numbers continue to decline. This engraving, taken from Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, serves as a reminder of the beauty and importance of these animals in the natural world.
