EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the striking features of the Tarantula wolf spider, Lycosa tarantula, also known as the Tarantula spider or the Old World tarantula. Drawn and engraved by the skilled hands of Richard Polydore Nodder, this illustration was published in George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's The Naturalist's Miscellany in London, 1803. The Tarantula wolf spider is a large and robust arachnid, belonging to the Lycosidae family. Its intimidating appearance is characterized by its long, hairy legs, which can measure up to 5 inches (13 cm) in length, and its distinctive, vibrant markings. The spider's body can grow up to 3 inches (8 cm) in length. Despite its fearsome appearance, the Tarantula wolf spider is not actually a true tarantula, as it belongs to a different genus. However, it shares the same defensive behavior as its namesake, the New World tarantulas. When threatened, the wolf spider will puff up its body and display its fangs, making itself appear larger and more intimidating. It can also emit a loud hissing sound and may even eject hairs from its body as a defense mechanism. The Tarantula wolf spider is a solitary hunter, preying on a variety of insects and other arthropods. It is a ground-dwelling spider and can be found in various parts of the world, including Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration not only showcases the Tarantula wolf spider's physical features but also highlights the artistry and skill of the naturalist illustrators of the time. It is a testament to the fascination with the natural world that existed during the early 19th century and continues to inspire wonder and curiosity today.
