EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative 18th century image, Alexander Spotswood, the Governor of the Colony of Virginia, leads the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe Expedition across the Blue Ridge Mountains. Dressed in a red coat and tricorn hat, Spotswood sits confidently atop his horse, with a map or compass in hand, as the rest of his party either catches up from behind or moves on ahead of the trail. The rugged terrain of the Blue Ridge Mountains is depicted in all its majesty, with dense forests and rocky outcroppings stretching out in every direction. A clear mountain stream runs through the scene, providing refreshment for a couple of dogs that quench their thirst. An Englishman, dressed in a brown coat and trousers, turns towards a Meherrin man who is seated on the bank of the stream. Several members of the Meherrin tribe accompanied Spotswood on this expedition, making this a significant intercultural encounter. The Meherrin man is shown wearing traditional clothing, including a loincloth and feather headdress, and is depicted in a peaceful and cooperative manner. The year is 1716, and the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe Expedition was an important exploration of the western territories of Virginia. Its primary goal was to establish trade relationships with the native peoples and to expand the colonial settlements westward. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, capturing the spirit of adventure and exploration that characterized the early days of American history.
