EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the elegance and allure of Hon. Ruth Mary Clarisse Ashley, daughter of Lt-Col Wilfred Ashley, 1st Baron Mount Temple, and sister of Edwina, Countess Mountbatten, in a Sketch magazine cover from 1925. At the time of this photograph, Ruth was unmarried, but her life was about to take a dramatic turn. In 1927, she married the dashing WWI flying ace, Captain Alec Cunningham-Reid. Their union was the talk of high society, but it was not to last. The couple divorced in 1931, and Cunningham-Reid famously sued his former wife for half her fortune. This bold move set off a scandal that shook the upper echelons of British society. Despite the controversy, Ruth's poised and sophisticated demeanor continued to captivate those around her. This image, with its timeless beauty and intriguing backstory, offers a glimpse into the glamour and intrigue of the Roaring Twenties.
