EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the facade of the Plough Public House in Ilford, Essex, during the 1960s. The image, taken by an unknown photographer, presents a nostalgic glimpse into the past, showcasing the traditional brick and tile exterior of the pub, adorned with ornate signage and a distinctive red and white striped awning. The Plough, located at IG1 2PF, was a long-standing establishment, with a trading record dating back to 1942, as detailed on the reverse of the print. However, the pub's history was cut short when it was demolished in 1964, making way for a medical centre. The Charrington and Company Limited, a well-known name in the brewing industry during the 1960s, likely owned and operated the Plough Public House at the time. This photograph offers a poignant reminder of the many public houses that once dotted the British landscape, each with their unique character and role as community hubs.
