David Douglas (1799-1834), the Scottish plant hunter, is depicted in this stunning woodblock engraving from the horticultural masterpiece, "Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe," published in Ghent, Belgium, in 1851 by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaire. Douglas, a humble and dedicated botanist, is shown in his explorer's attire, holding a small potted plant and a sketchbook, surrounded by a lush and exotic array of flora. Born in Scotland, Douglas's passion for botany was ignited at a young age. He began his career as an apprentice gardener and later became a gardener at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. In 1823, he embarked on his first plant hunting expedition to North America, where he discovered numerous new plant species, including the Douglas Fir, which was later named in his honor. Douglas's adventurous spirit and unwavering dedication to botanical discovery led him to explore various parts of the world, including the Pacific Northwest of North America, New Zealand, and Australia. His discoveries significantly expanded the horticultural world, contributing to the development of new gardens and hothouses in Europe.
