EDITORS COMMENTS
Claude de France, Duchess of Brittany, and the first wife of King Francis I of France, is depicted in this stunning hand-colored lithograph by Leopold Massard. The portrait, based on an original in Roger de Gaignières portfolio VII 12 from Le Bibliophile Jacob aka Paul Lacroix's Historiques de la France, showcases the elegant and opulent fashion of the early 16th century. Claude, born in 1499, was the eldest daughter of Louis XII of France and Anne of Brittany. Her marriage to Francis I in 1514 was a strategic alliance between the two powerful monarchies. In this image, Claude is dressed in a sumptuous costume consisting of two robes layered on top of each other. The outer robe, adorned with intricate gold and silver embroidery, is supported by a massive vertugadin or farthingale, which was a popular fashion accessory during the Renaissance period. The vertugadin, a large hoop skirt, was worn to create the illusion of an hourglass figure and add volume to the dress. The inner robe, also richly decorated, is visible at the neckline and cuffs of the outer robe. The elaborate headdress, adorned with pearls and feathers, completes the regal appearance of the Duchess. Claude's marriage to Francis I was short-lived, as she passed away in 1517, just three years after their union. However, her legacy as a powerful and influential queen continues to be celebrated in French history. This beautiful lithograph is a testament to the grandeur and elegance of the French court during the Renaissance era.
