EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts the renowned French actors Adrien Joly and Petit Veldeman in their roles as a demon and a coureur, respectively, in the fairy vaudeville spectacle "La Biche au Bois" at the Theatre de la Porte St. Martin in Paris, 1845. The image is based on an illustration by Alexandre Lacauchie, as published in Victor Dollet's "Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Theatres de Paris." Adrien Joly, portrayed as a menacing demon, captivates the audience with his intense gaze and imposing presence. His horns, pointed tail, and fiery red costume add to the ominous atmosphere, reinforcing the supernatural elements of the production. Petit Veldeman, on the other hand, embodies the character of a coureur, or a woodsman, with his rugged appearance and determined expression. His naturalistic costume, complete with a fur-trimmed jacket and a hunting rifle, further enhances his portrayal of a skilled hunter in the enchanted forest. The Cogniard brothers, who directed the production, were known for their innovative and visually stunning theatrical productions. "La Biche au Bois" was a popular fairy vaudeville that showcased the acting talents of Adrien Joly and Petit Veldeman, as well as the impressive stage design and costumes of the time. This handcoloured lithograph is a testament to the theatrical artistry of the 19th century and offers a glimpse into the world of French theatre during this period. The intricate details and vibrant colours bring the characters to life, making it a valuable historical document and an aesthetically pleasing work of art.
