EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Belvedere Tavern in Nunhead, London, in its former glory before its demolition in July 2018. The pub, a cherished local institution, is depicted here in a classic, front-facing view that showcases its distinctive architectural features. The Belvedere Tavern, a public house, was a beloved watering hole for the community of Nunhead, known for its warm atmosphere and welcoming vibe. The building, which dates back to the late 19th or early 20th century, was owned by the Hoare and Company Limited. The company, which had a rich history in the brewing industry, had overseen the Belvedere Tavern's operations for many years. The pub's exterior, with its ornate brickwork, intricate details, and inviting frontage, was a testament to the craftsmanship and design sensibilities of the time. Sadly, the Belvedere Tavern, like many historic pubs in urban areas, fell victim to development pressures. In its place, 14 new flats now stand. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Belvedere Tavern's rich history and the sense of community it once provided to the people of Nunhead. The back of the print includes the address of the pub, SE15 3LW, for those who may wish to remember its location. This print, taken by The National Brewery Heritage Trust, is a valuable addition to any collection of historical London images or for those who appreciate the history of pubs and their role in community life.
