EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the elegance and allure of Mrs. Cunningham-Reid, née Ruth Mary Clarisse Ashley, in the golden age of the 1930s. Daughter of the esteemed Lt-Col Wilfred Ashley, 1st Baron Mount Temple, and sister of the renowned socialite, Edwina, Countess Mountbatten, Ruth's pedigree placed her among the upper echelons of high society. In 1927, she married the dashing WWI flying ace, Captain Alec Cunningham-Reid, a union that would later end in divorce. The portrait, expertly captured by the renowned photographer, Yevonde, showcases Ruth's striking features, with her piercing gaze and sophisticated style. Her elegant attire, adorned with intricate beading and a chic hat, is emblematic of the refined fashion sensibilities of the era. Despite her privileged background, Ruth's life was not without controversy. Her divorce from Captain Cunningham-Reid, which occurred in the 1930s, made headlines as he sought half her substantial fortune. This portrait, however, offers a glimpse into a moment in time when Ruth's beauty and poise shone brightly, transcending the gossip columns and captivating the imagination of onlookers.
