EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a Merveilleuse, a woman of the French Revolution's radical elite, adorned in a simple yet elegant Grecian-style costume. The Merveilleuses were a group of Parisian women known for their flamboyant and extravagant attire, embodying the revolutionary spirit of freedom and individuality. However, as the ideals of the Revolution became more radicalized, some Merveilleuses chose to adopt a more restrained and classical look, drawing inspiration from the heroic age of ancient Greece. The woman in this print wears a flowing white tunic, cinched at the waist with a belt, and a himation, or large shawl, draped over one shoulder. Her hair is styled in loose waves, reminiscent of Greek statues, and she holds a fan adorned with the Phrygian cap, a symbol of liberty. The backdrop of the print features a serene landscape, further emphasizing the connection between the Merveilleuse and the classical world. The year is 1794, a time of great upheaval and change in French history. The Reign of Terror, a period of extreme violence and political purges, had begun, and the ideals of the Revolution were being tested. Amidst this chaos, the Merveilleuses continued to push for change, some through radical means and others through more subtle forms of resistance. This print serves as a reminder of the complex and multifaceted nature of the French Revolution, and the diverse ways in which women participated in this pivotal moment in history.
