EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the Memorial built on the site of Jean Chatel's infamous attempt on the life of Henri IV, the first Bourbon King of France, on December 27, 1594. The image portrays a solemn and reflective scene, with the statue of the King standing tall and resolute amidst the ruins of the memorial. Henri IV, a popular monarch who united France after years of religious and political turmoil, was nearly assassinated by Chatel, a disgruntled nobleman, while attending Mass at the Church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois in Paris. The attempt on the King's life was a significant event in French history, as it underscored the ongoing instability and threats to the monarchy during this tumultuous period. The Memorial, an expiatory structure, was erected on the site of the assassination attempt just one year after the event, in 1595. It served as a reminder of the dangers faced by the monarch and the importance of unity and peace in the realm. The memorial, however, was destroyed in 1605, during the reign of Henri IV's successor, Louis XIII. Despite its brief existence, the Memorial remains an important symbol of the tumultuous times in which it was built and serves as a testament to the enduring strength and resilience of the French monarchy. This print, created in the aftermath of the event, offers a glimpse into the past and provides a poignant reminder of the historical significance of this pivotal moment in French history.
