EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures Mary Tudor, also known as Mary I of England and Mary I of Ireland, in the later years of her reign as Queen of England from 1553 to 1558. Daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, Mary was married to the future Philip II of Spain in 1554, marking the end of the English Reformation and the beginning of a period of Catholic rule in England. Mary's reign was marked by her determined efforts to restore Catholicism in England, earning her the nickname "Bloody Mary" due to the persecution and execution of Protestants during her rule. Her autograph in the bottom right corner of the print attests to the authenticity of the image, adding a personal touch to this historical artifact. Born in 1516, Mary was the only surviving child of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Her reign was a tumultuous one, as she faced opposition from Protestant factions and the English people who had grown accustomed to the Protestant faith under her predecessor, Edward VI. Mary's attempts to re-establish Catholicism in England led to the burning of Protestant books and the execution of Protestant leaders, earning her a fearsome reputation. Despite her controversial reign, Mary Tudor remains an intriguing figure in English and European history. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a queen who defied the odds and ruled during a time of religious and political upheaval. The inscription in her own hand adds a personal touch to this historical artifact, making it a valuable addition to any collection of Tudor history.
