EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the essence of traditional Scottish clan costume as worn by a representative of the MacKinnon clan. The image is taken from "The Highland Clans of Scotland Vol. 2," published in 1923, and offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Scotland's Highland clans. The MacKinnon clan, one of the oldest and most distinguished Highland clans, is represented here by a proud and noble figure dressed in the full regalia of his ancestral lineage. The tartan plaid, a distinctive pattern unique to the MacKinnon clan, is draped over the man's broad shoulders and fastened at the waist with a sash, or belt, known as a "feallamh." The plaid is adorned with a brooch, or "brooch of Gaelic knots," which is a symbol of the clan's history and heritage. The man wears a "gillie brogues," or traditional Scottish highland shoes, which are made of leather and feature a distinctive lacing pattern. He also wears a "balmoral bonnet," a tall, round hat with a pom-pom on the top, which is a common accessory in Highland dress. The man's face is adorned with a "quaich," a traditional Scottish drinking cup, which is worn as a decorative piece. The quaich is often used in clan gatherings and ceremonies, and is a symbol of hospitality and friendship. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of Scotland's Highland clans and their rich cultural traditions. It offers a glimpse into a bygone era, and serves as a reminder of the pride and heritage that continues to define the Scottish people to this day.
