This portrait captures the young and enigmatic Ludwig II of Bavaria, reigning from March 1864 until his mysterious death in June 1886. Born on August 25, 1845, Ludwig was the only son of Maximilian II of Bavaria and his wife, Princess Marie Friederike of Prussia. Known for his eccentricity and passion for art and architecture, Ludwig II left an indelible mark on Bavarian history. The photograph, taken anonymously during Ludwig's youth, showcases the future king's striking features - his piercing blue eyes, high forehead, and delicate facial structure. Ludwig's regal bearing is evident in his posture, with his chest puffed out and his hands clasped in front of him. The black-and-white image adds an air of timelessness and intrigue, drawing the viewer in and inviting them to delve deeper into the complex history of this enigmatic monarch.
