EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, created by A. Sargent for The Illustrated Universe in 1881, depicts a pivotal moment during the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition (1803-1806). At the helm of the small, wooden boat is William Clark (1770-1838), a prominent American military officer and explorer. Accompanying him are a group of determined men, navigating their way through the treacherous rapids and rocks of a river, marking their trail as they crossed the first stream in their journey. The Lewis and Clark Expedition, commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, was a significant event in American history. Its primary objectives were to explore and map the newly acquired Louisiana Territory, establish an American presence, and establish trade with Native American tribes. The expedition was composed of a Corps of Discovery, which included soldiers, hunters, and a French-Canadian interpreter, Toussaint Charbonneau, and his Shoshone wife, Sacagawea, who served as a guide. The passage through the rapids was a dangerous and challenging part of their journey. The men had to row with great care, maneuvering around the submerged rocks and navigating the swift currents. The expedition faced numerous hardships, including harsh weather, limited supplies, and encounters with Native American tribes. Despite these challenges, the Lewis and Clark Expedition was a remarkable success. They discovered a vast and diverse landscape, made significant scientific discoveries, and established important relationships with Native American tribes. This engraving serves as a testament to their courage, determination, and the spirit of exploration that defined the 18th and 19th centuries in American history.
