EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intense gaze of John Thomas Scopes, the American schoolteacher who became a symbol of the debate over evolution education in the United States. Taken in the late 1970s, several decades after the landmark Scopes Trial of 1925, Scopes is shown here in the prime of his life, with his steel-rimmed spectacles perched on the bridge of his nose and a determined expression etched on his face. Born in 1900 in Dayton, Tennessee, Scopes was a young and enthusiastic biology teacher when he was charged with violating a state law that prohibited the teaching of evolution in public schools. The trial, which took place in the summer of 1925, drew national attention and became a battleground for the clash between science and religion. Scopes was defended by the American Civil Liberties Union and famed attorney Clarence Darrow, while the prosecution was led by William Jennings Bryan, a prominent figure in the fundamentalist Christian movement. Despite the outcome of the trial, which resulted in Scopes being found guilty and fined $100, the case helped to bring the issue of evolution education into the national spotlight and paved the way for the eventual acceptance of the theory in schools. Scopes went on to become a minor celebrity, traveling the country and speaking about his experiences. This photograph captures a moment in history when one man's courage to stand up for his beliefs sparked a national debate that would shape the course of American education for generations to come.
