EDITORS COMMENTS
This CDV, or carte-de-visite, features the renowned English artist and cartoonist, John Leech (1817-1864). Born on March 14, 1817, in London, Leech is best known for his satirical and humorous illustrations, which graced the pages of Punch, a popular British weekly magazine. His work was instrumental in shaping the satirical and humorous illustrative tradition in the 19th century. Leech's career began in the 1830s when he apprenticed as an engraver. However, he soon turned to illustration and cartooning, and by the 1840s, his work had become a regular feature in Punch. His satirical drawings often targeted political and social issues, making him a voice of the people and a commentator on the times. This CDV, taken in 1864, captures Leech in his later years. The photograph reveals a man with a serious expression, dressed in a formal suit and wearing a bow tie. Despite his stern appearance, the twinkle in his eyes suggests a hint of mischief, a nod to his satirical nature. Leech's legacy extends beyond his work in Punch. He also illustrated several books, including "A Book of Nonsense" by Edward Lear and "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll. His influence on the world of cartooning and illustration is immeasurable, and his work continues to be celebrated and admired to this day. This CDV is a rare and valuable glimpse into the life of a man who brought joy and satire to the masses through his art. It serves as a reminder of the power of humor and the importance of speaking truth to power through art.
