EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the grand inauguration of the Fountain of Kaiser Wilhelm II in Constantinople, now Istanbul, on January 27, 1901. The second visit of the German Emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm II, to the city was an occasion of great pomp and ceremony. The Fountain, a gift from the German Emperor to the Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II, was a symbol of the close relationship between the German Empire and the Ottoman Empire at the turn of the 20th century. The photograph shows a large crowd gathered around the newly inaugurated fountain, with the Emperor and Sultan standing together, observing the festivities. The Sultan, dressed in traditional Ottoman attire, is seen wearing a red fez and holding a golden topknot, while Kaiser Wilhelm II is dressed in his military uniform, complete with a decorative sash and a tall, plumed hat. The Fountain of Kaiser Wilhelm II, located in the heart of Istanbul's Yildiz Park, was an impressive architectural feat of the time. The fountain featured a large central basin, surrounded by four smaller basins, and was adorned with intricate sculptures and ornate decorations. The water was supplied by a spring located deep beneath the park, and the fountain was designed to be powered by a hydraulic system. The inauguration of the Fountain of Kaiser Wilhelm II marked a significant moment in the history of both the German and Ottoman Empires. The close relationship between the two empires would continue to shape the political landscape of the region for decades to come. Today, the Fountain of Kaiser Wilhelm II stands as a reminder of the rich cultural and historical ties between Germany and Turkey.
