This charming illustration, titled 'Little Jack Horner,' dates back to the 1890s and was created by an unidentified artist, now known through the Mary Evans Picture Library as Terry Parker. The illustration depicts a mischievous young boy, Little Jack Horner, seated at a quaint, tiled table adorned with a red-checked tablecloth. Surrounding him are various cats, some curious, others playfully intrigued by the scene unfolding before them. At the center of the table, a large, inviting pie sits, its golden crust glistening under the warm, natural light filtering in from the window behind Jack. With a gleeful expression on his face, Jack reaches into the pie, pulling out a plump plum with a gleaming knife and fork in hand. The pie's crust is left slightly open, revealing a hint of the delicious filling within. This illustration is a beautiful representation of the classic English nursery rhyme, 'Little Jack Horner,' which tells the story of a boy who, after being given a curdler's boy's place in the butcher's shop, pulls a plum from a pie and ultimately becomes a baker.
