EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson (1810-1895), a renowned British archaeologist and orientalist, is captured in this striking carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph from 1895. Known for his groundbreaking work in Assyrian archaeology, Rawlinson's contributions to the field significantly advanced the understanding of ancient Near Eastern civilizations. Born in Gloucestershire, England, Rawlinson's fascination with the East began at a young age. He joined the British Army in 1828, serving in India, where he became proficient in Persian and other Eastern languages. This linguistic expertise proved invaluable when he was tasked with deciphering the cuneiform inscriptions on the Behistun Rock in Persia in the late 1830s. This achievement, known as the "Decipherment of the Behistun Inscription," opened the door to a career in archaeology and oriental studies. Rawlinson's work on Assyrian archaeology began in earnest in the 1840s, when he was sent to Iraq as part of a diplomatic mission. During his time there, he discovered numerous ancient artifacts and inscriptions, many of which were previously unknown to Western scholars. He also collaborated with fellow archaeologist George Smith on the translation of the Assyrian King Sargon II's library, which contained important historical and literary texts. In this CDV photograph, Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson is depicted in formal attire, with a serious expression and piercing gaze. The image captures the intensity and focus of a man who dedicated his life to uncovering the secrets of the ancient world. His pioneering work in Assyrian archaeology continues to influence scholars and researchers today, making him a pivotal figure in the history of archaeology and the study of ancient civilizations.
