EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the H.M.S. Triumph in action during the Japanese attack on the German position at Tsingtao, China in October to November 1914. Originally ordered by Chile and launched in 1903, the Triumph was later purchased by the British to prevent her from falling into Russian hands. The ship's impressive size and power are on full display as she engages the enemy in this historic moment of the First World War. The Triumph played a significant role in the Japanese victory at Tsingtao, a key port city on the German-controlled Shandong Peninsula. The successful attack marked a turning point in the war, as it demonstrated the Allied Powers' ability to challenge German power in Asia. After the victory at Tsingtao, the Triumph went on to take part in the Dardanelles campaign, a failed attempt to seize the Turkish straits and open a route to the Black Sea. Tragically, the ship was sunk by a torpedo on May 25, 1915, during the campaign. This photograph is a testament to the Triumph's storied history and her place in the annals of World War I. It offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of global conflict and historical significance.
