He joined UCL in 1837, initially as an assistant to Thomas Graham, and later becoming a professor in 1842. Fownes' research focused on various aspects of chemistry, including electrochemistry, organic chemistry, and the study of gases. One of his most notable achievements was his work on electrolysis, specifically the electrolysis of water. He discovered that the process produced hydrogen and oxygen gases, which was a crucial step in understanding the fundamental principles of electrochemistry.
