EDITORS COMMENTS
Friedrich Leopold Graf zu Stolberg-Stolberg (1750-1819), a German poet and diplomat, is depicted in this elegant and formal portrait. Born into the noble Stolberg family, Stolberg-Stolberg was educated in law and literature, and went on to serve as a diplomat for various German states. However, his true passion was poetry, and he is best known for his works in the Sturm und Drang literary movement, which emphasized emotion and individualism. Stolberg's poetry was deeply influenced by the Enlightenment and the Romantic literary tradition. He wrote in a variety of genres, including odes, sonnets, and ballads. One of his most famous works is "An die Nacht," or "To the Night," which explores the beauty and mystery of the night and the human longing for connection and understanding. Despite his literary achievements, Stolberg's diplomatic career continued to be an important part of his life. He served as the ambassador of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg to the court of Russia and later to the court of Prussia. In these roles, he played a key role in diplomatic negotiations between various European powers. This portrait of Stolberg, taken in the late 18th century, captures the poet and diplomat in the prime of his life. He is dressed in the formal attire of the time, with a serious and contemplative expression on his face. The background is simple, with a plain wall and a simple chair, drawing the viewer's attention to the subject. The portrait is a testament to Stolberg's dual roles as a poet and diplomat, and to his enduring influence on German literature and diplomacy.
