EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving showcases Francois Gabriel de Riquetti, Count of Bray-Southern (1765-1832), a prominent Franco-Bavarian diplomat and statesman of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Munich, Bavaria, Bray-Southern was a scion of the illustrious Riquetti family, which held significant political influence in Europe. The Count is depicted in formal attire, donning an elegant suit, complete with a stylish cravat and a bow at his waist. His face, framed by sideburns and a neatly trimmed mustache, exudes an air of sophistication and authority. Bray-Southern's right hand rests on a sword, signifying his knighthood, while his left hand holds a quill pen, symbolizing his role as a prolific letter writer and diplomat. As a diplomat, Bray-Southern served the French and Bavarian courts, playing a pivotal role in European politics during the tumultuous period following the French Revolution. He was a key figure in the Congress of Vienna (1814-1815), where the European powers reorganized the continent after the Napoleonic Wars. Bray-Southern's connection to Malta is also noteworthy. He was a Grand Cross of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, one of the oldest and most prestigious chivalric orders in the world. The Order, which had its headquarters on the Mediterranean island of Malta, played a significant role in the history of Europe, particularly in the Crusades and the defense of Christendom against the Ottoman Turks. This evocative portrait, created in the late 19th century, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable European statesman and diplomat, whose influence extended far beyond the borders of his native France and Bavaria.
