EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait captures the elegant and enigmatic Duchesse de Maine, Anne Louise Benedicte de Bourbon-Condé (1676-1753), wife of Louis Auguste, the legitimate son of King Louis XIV of France and Madame de Maintenon. The painting, created in the late 17th century, showcases the Duchess's refined beauty and sophisticated style. Born on July 24, 1676, Anne Louise Benedicte was the daughter of Louis II, Duke of Bourbon and Princess Henrietta Anne of England. Her marriage to Louis Auguste, the Duke of Maine, took place on March 14, 1692, at the Palace of Versailles, in an elaborate ceremony attended by the French court. The Duchess of Maine was known for her intelligence, grace, and strong will. She was a devoted wife and mother, bearing her husband six children. However, her marriage was not without controversy. The union was arranged by Madame de Maintenon, the king's mistress and the Duchess's stepmother, who aimed to secure a powerful alliance for her own interests. Despite the political machinations surrounding her marriage, Anne Louise Benedicte proved to be an excellent wife and mother. She was a patron of the arts and a generous philanthropist, supporting various charitable causes and religious institutions. In this portrait, the Duchess is depicted wearing an elegant gown adorned with intricate lace and pearls, accessorized with a diamond necklace and matching earrings. Her hair is styled in an elaborate coiffure, held in place by a diamond diadem. Her expression is serene and regal, reflecting her inner strength and dignity. The portrait is a testament to the Duchess's beauty, elegance, and status as a member of the French nobility. It offers a glimpse into the opulent world of the French court during the reign of Louis XIV and provides a fascinating insight into the life of one of its most intriguing figures.
