This photograph captures Constance Gordon-Cumming, also known as Eka, a Scottish traveller, artist, and author, in the later years of her extraordinary life. Born in 1837, Constance's insatiable curiosity and adventurous spirit led her to travel extensively throughout the world, with a particular focus on the South Pacific. In Fiji, Constance made her home for many years, creating hundreds of travel paintings and writing numerous travel books. Her works, which vividly depicted the people, landscapes, and cultures of Fiji, were highly regarded for their authenticity and sensitivity. Constance's artistic talent was evident from an early age, and she studied at the Royal Academy in London before embarking on her travels. Her experiences in the South Pacific inspired her to document the world around her, resulting in a body of work that remains an invaluable record of life in the region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite the challenges of living in a foreign land, Constance persevered, immersing herself in the local culture and building strong relationships with the Fijian people.
