EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles de Valois, Comte d'Auvergne and Duc d'Angouleme (1573-1650), was a natural son of King Charles IX of France, born out of his father's liaison with Marie Touchet, the Marquise de Blainville. Despite his illegitimate birth, Charles was recognized and raised by his father, who granted him the titles and estates of Comte d'Auvergne and Duc d'Angouleme. This striking portrait, dated around 1573, captures the young Charles de Valois in his early years. He is depicted wearing the robes and collar of the Order of the Holy Spirit, an honor bestowed upon him by his father, signifying his high rank and royal favor. The portrait's rich colors and intricate detailing reflect the opulence and grandeur of the French court during the Renaissance period. Charles de Valois played an active role in French politics throughout his life, serving as a diplomat, military leader, and governor. He was a key figure in the intrigues and power struggles that marked the French monarchy during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Despite his illegitimate birth, he managed to carve out a significant place for himself in French history. This portrait is a testament to the complex and fascinating world of the French court during the Renaissance period, where illegitimate sons could still rise to prominence and wield great power and influence. It is a reminder of the intricate web of alliances, power struggles, and political maneuvering that defined the French monarchy during this period and continues to captivate historians and scholars today.
