EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph print, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, captures Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge (1774-1850), a prominent military figure and the eldest son of King George III. Born on October 31, 1774, Adolphus Frederick served in the British Army for over sixty years, rising to the rank of Field Marshal and becoming the Commander-in-Chief of the Army in 1812. The Duke's military career began in earnest during the French Revolutionary Wars, where he saw action in Flanders and Holland. He was later appointed Governor-General of Hanover in 1814, a position he held until 1830. Adolphus Frederick's military accomplishments earned him numerous decorations, including the Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry in the British monarchy. This photograph, taken likely in the mid-19th century, shows the Duke in full military regalia, adorned with his medals and insignia. The image is a poignant reminder of the Duke's significant role in British military history and his connection to the royal family. Adolphus Frederick is also an important figure in the genealogy of the British monarchy. He is the grandfather of Mary of Teck (1867-1953), who would later marry King George V in 1893. Mary's lineage, which includes Queen Elizabeth II, continues to this day. This historical photograph print offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of a pivotal figure in British military and royal history. The image, with its rich detail and striking composition, is a must-have for any history or royalty enthusiast.
