Amidst the arid expanse of the Middle Eastern desert during the First World War, the cactus hedges near Deir el Balah in Palestine presented a formidable obstacle to advancing troops. Circa 1917-1918, these prickly barriers stretched across the sandy terrain, their spines glinting menacingly in the hot sun. The cacti, a native adaptation to the harsh desert climate, had taken root in abundance, creating an almost impenetrable hedge.
