EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of departure for a British colonial battalion en route to Cameroon, west central Africa, during the early days of the First World War. The 1st Battalion of the Nigeria Regiment, a part of the British Army, is seen boarding a train at Kaduna, Nigeria. The soldiers, all armed with Lee-Enfield rifles and short bayonets, are preparing to travel to Lagos and onwards to their destination, the capital of Cameroon, Douala. Their blankets and rain capes are rolled up on their backs, essential gear for the challenging climate and terrain they are about to encounter. In the foreground, a bare-headed soldier carries his sleeping mat under his left arm, adding to the sense of the soldiers' readiness for the long journey ahead. Dated 6th August 1914, this image offers a poignant glimpse into the experiences of the British colonial troops during the First World War, as they left their homes and families to serve their country in a distant land.
