EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Sir Allen William Young (1827-1915) is depicted in his full sailor and explorer regalia, exuding an air of authority and experience. Taken in the late 1870s, the image captures Young at the height of his illustrious career as a polar explorer and sailor. Young's striking presence is accentuated by his flat cap, adorned with a cockade and ribbon, and his sword slung at his side. The sword, a symbol of his rank and status, adds an element of danger and adventure to the image. Young's piercing gaze and stern expression suggest a man who is not only capable but also determined and focused. Born in England in 1827, Young joined the Royal Navy at a young age and saw action in several major conflicts, including the Crimean War. However, it was his exploits in the Arctic that would make him a legend. In 1852, he joined the crew of the HMS Resolute, led by Sir Edward Belcher, on a search for the lost Franklin Expedition. Young's bravery and leadership skills were on full display during this harrowing journey, which saw the crew battle against treacherous ice floes, starvation, and scurvy. Despite the hardships, Young and his crew persevered, and their efforts led to the discovery of the Franklin Expedition's abandoned ships and the rescue of several survivors. Young's heroism earned him a knighthood and the respect of his peers. He continued to explore the Arctic for several more decades, making significant contributions to our understanding of the region and its people. This photograph is a testament to Sir Allen William Young's remarkable life and accomplishments as a sailor and polar explorer. It is a historical image that captures the spirit of adventure and determination that defined his career and continues to inspire us today.
