EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the 1880s, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of Springfield Brewery in Wolverhampton. Standing proudly on Cambridge Street, this iconic industrial landmark was built in 1873 by William Butler, with architect R Sinclair overseeing its construction. The south front of the brewery is beautifully captured in this image from the Bedford Lemere daybook. The photograph showcases the impressive exterior of Springfield Brewery, highlighting its architectural elegance and scale. Majestic chimneys rise towards the sky while intricate detailing adorns every corner. It's clear that no expense was spared in creating this brewing masterpiece. However, history has not been kind to Springfield Brewery. After operating for over a century, it sadly closed its doors in 1991. Tragedy struck again when a devastating fire partially destroyed what remained of this once-thriving establishment in 2004. Despite these setbacks, this print serves as a poignant reminder of Springfield Brewery's significance within Wolverhampton's industrial landscape. It stands as a testament to both craftsmanship and innovation during an era when breweries played an integral role in local communities. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this image allows us to appreciate the rich heritage and architectural splendor that once graced Cambridge Street – forever capturing a moment frozen in time for future generations to admire and reflect upon.
