Removing earlier foundations JLP01_08_079117
Minories Car Park, 1 Shorter Street, City of London. A man in a suit stands in the basement excavations of Minories Car Park as two workers behind him break up concrete with pneumatic drills.
Laing built the Minories Car Park between July 1968 and December 1969. The site was a former Victorian railway yard. The brick and concrete bases of two locomotive turntables were in the way of the car parks piling foundations. They were eventually removed with controlled explosions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense construction work taking place at Minories Car Park in the City of London. In the image, a distinguished man in a suit stands confidently amidst the basement excavations, overseeing two workers diligently breaking up concrete with powerful pneumatic drills. The car park, built by Laing between July 1968 and December 1969, was erected on the grounds of a former Victorian railway yard. However, before its foundations could be laid, an obstacle stood in their way – the brick and concrete bases of two locomotive turntables. These remnants from another era had to be removed to make space for the modern multi-storey car park. To accomplish this challenging task, controlled explosions were employed to safely dismantle these historical structures. The sheer determination and expertise exhibited by those involved is evident in this photograph as they meticulously carry out their duties. This image not only showcases the remarkable engineering feat achieved during this period but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and progress. It reminds us that even when faced with formidable obstacles from our past, we have both the ability and responsibility to adapt and create something new for future generations. Through this snapshot frozen in time, we are transported back to an era where hard work and innovation shaped our urban landscapes into what we see today.
