EDITORS COMMENTS
Andrea Vaccaro's Susanna and the Elders, painted in the 1650s, is a captivating Baroque masterpiece that continues to intrigue viewers with its complex narrative and bold depiction of nudity. The painting, currently in a private collection, is based on the biblical story of Susanna, as told in the Book of Daniel. In the scene, Susanna, a beautiful and virtuous woman, is bathing in her garden when she is seduced by two elderly judges who have been hiding in the bushes. Susanna, however, remains faithful to her husband and refuses their advances. In retaliation, the judges falsely accuse Susanna of adultery. Daniel, the prophet, intervenes and uncovers the truth by asking Susanna to identify the trees from which the judges had eaten their fruit during their rendezvous. Susanna correctly identifies the trees, and the judges are exposed for their lies. Vaccaro's interpretation of the story is both sensual and just. Susanna, portrayed as a nude woman, is depicted with a serene expression, her body bathed in light. The two elderly judges, also nude, are shown in the background, their faces contorted in desire and deceit. The implausibility of the scene, with its combination of nudity and justice, is a testament to the artist's skill and the power of the Baroque style. This oil on canvas painting, a fine example of the School of Naples, is a reminder of the enduring appeal of the Susanna and the Elders story and the artistic mastery of Andrea Vaccaro.
