Sketchbook, page 09: Mountians and Rocks, 1859. Gifford was an American landscape painter belonging to the second generation of Hudson River school artists. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from Sanford Robinson Gifford's sketchbook, specifically page 09: Mountains and Rocks, dating back to 1859. Gifford was an esteemed American landscape painter associated with the second generation of Hudson River school artists. His studio at the renowned Tenth Street Studio Building in New York City served as his creative haven, but he frequently embarked on summer expeditions to picturesque locations like the Catskills, Adirondacks, and New England. The sketchbook featured in this image accompanied Gifford during his remarkable journey through New Hampshire and Maine in 1859. During this expedition, he meticulously captured various sites such as Dixville Notch, the White Mountains, and Peaks Island in Casco Bay. These graphite studies formed the foundation for his later oil paintings that were meticulously crafted within his studio. One notable masterpiece resulting from these sketches is "A Home in the Wilderness" completed by Gifford in 1866. This photograph offers us a glimpse into Gifford's artistic process and reveals how he translated these initial sketches into stunning oil paintings. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images and housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art (not affiliated with any commercial entity), this bound volume serves as a testament to Gifford's talent and dedication to capturing nature's beauty on canvas. It allows us to appreciate both his skillful technique and his deep connection with America's awe-inspiring landscapes during the 19th century.
