Ruins of the Priory of Mount Grace, East Harlsey, York, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Ruins of the Priory of Mount Grace, East Harlsey, York, 1850. View of the...beautiful and extensive ruins of a Carthusian Priory [in Yorkshire], founded a.d. 1396, by Thomas de Holland, Duke of Surrey...and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and St. Nicholas...The secluded situation and romantic gloom of this monastery seem to have been particularly adapted to the austerities of the rigid order of the Carthusians...A Gothic archway forms the entrance into the chief quadrangle, the outer walls of which enclose about three acres of ground, and are still standing fantastically covered with ivy. The inner court is surrounded by double walls, where we may still detect...the cells...of the sterner devotees, or the delinquents of the order. The church, which is now in ruins, was in the form of a cross; the tower, yet perfect, rising from the centre, and supported by four arches'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the haunting beauty of the Ruins of the Priory of Mount Grace in East Harlsey, Yorkshire, as they appeared in 1850. The Carthusian Priory, founded in 1396 by Thomas de Holland, Duke of Surrey, is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and St. Nicholas. The secluded and romantic setting of this monastery was believed to be perfectly suited to the austere lifestyle of the Carthusian order. The photograph showcases the impressive Gothic archway that serves as the entrance to the main quadrangle, enclosing approximately three acres of land. The outer walls, still standing and covered in ivy, surround the inner court, where the cells of the devotees or the wayward members of the order can still be detected. The church, now in ruins, was designed in the shape of a cross, with the central tower, still intact, rising from its foundation and supported by four arches. The Carthusian Priory of Mount Grace is a testament to the rich history and architectural grandeur of medieval England. Its beautiful and extensive ruins continue to draw visitors from all corners of the world, offering a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the spiritual devotion that once thrived within its walls.
