Oliver Goldsmiths house, Canonbury, Islington, 1912. Canonbury Tower formed part of a manor house of the Priors of St Bartholomew. The Tower itself dates from the mid 16th century. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries it was acquired by Sir John Spencer, Lord Mayor of London, who added the two wings. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1912, capturing the essence of Oliver Goldsmith's house in Canonbury, Islington. The artist behind this remarkable piece is Frederick Adcock, who skillfully portrays the historical significance of this iconic building. Canonbury Tower, dating back to the mid-16th century, was once part of a manor house belonging to the Priors of St Bartholomew. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, it came into possession of Sir John Spencer, Lord Mayor of London. He expanded its grandeur by adding two wings to create what we see today. During his time in London during the 1760s, renowned Irish-born British playwright and novelist Oliver Goldsmith resided within these very walls. Goldsmith's literary contributions have left an indelible mark on English literature with works such as "The Vicar of Wakefield" (1766), "The Deserted Village" (1770), and "She Stoops to Conquer" (1773). This illustration from Famous Houses and Literary Shrines showcases not only Goldsmith's former residence but also highlights its architectural beauty against a backdrop that captures London's charm. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this image while emphasizing every intricate detail. Frederick Adcock has masterfully brought together history and artistry in this print - allowing us a glimpse into both Oliver Goldsmith's world and one of London's treasured landmarks.
