EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Lord Kelvin, the renowned Scottish physicist and mathematician, in 1897. The artist behind this remarkable portrait is Spy, also known as Sir Leslie Ward or Leslie Matthew Ward. Lord Kelvin, born William Thomson in 1824, was an exceptional scholar who received his education at Glasgow and Cambridge universities. He held the esteemed position of Professor of Natural Philosophy (Physics) at the University of Glasgow for an impressive span of 53 years. Lord Kelvin's contributions to science were groundbreaking; he played a pivotal role in advancing thermodynamics and electromagnetic theory. Additionally, he devised the temperature scale that bears his name today. Notably, Lord Kelvin directed the monumental project involving the first transatlantic cable telegraph—a feat that brought him substantial wealth and made him perhaps the first scientist to achieve such financial success through his work. In this lithograph caricature from Vanity Fair dated April 29th, 1897, we see Lord Kelvin portrayed with great attention to detail. His distinguished beard frames a face filled with intellect and determination. Clad in a stylish overcoat and scarf befitting a man of his stature during Victorian times, Lord Kelvin exudes confidence and authority. This print serves as both a tribute to one of history's most influential scientists and a testament to Spy's artistic talent in capturing not only physical features but also the essence of an individual's character on paper.
