EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to a bygone era, showcasing how London has transformed since the days when top hats were worn by outside passengers. The image captures a moment in time, circa 1900, where elegantly dressed individuals donning their iconic toppers can be seen on the upper deck of a horse-drawn London bus. These historic buses, dating back to 1829 with George Shillibeers Omnibus being the first of its kind, were an integral part of London's transportation system. However, as technology progressed and motorized vehicles took over the streets, this mode of transport gradually faded away. The last recorded horse omnibus service was provided by a Tilling bus in 1914 between Peckham and Honor Oak Tavern. The photograph is sourced from "Wonderful London, Volume 1" edited by Arthur St John Adcock. It offers us a glimpse into the architectural beauty of Victorian-era buildings lining the avenue as well as street scenes filled with lampposts illuminating the road. As we admire this monochrome masterpiece captured in the 1930s, it serves as a reminder of how much London has evolved over time while still retaining its unique charm. This snapshot freezes history for us to appreciate and reflect upon our ever-changing urban landscape and modes of transportation that have shaped our cityscape throughout centuries past.
