Humble Pie, 1872. Artist: Joseph Swain

Humble Pie, 1872. Mr Bull, the representative of the British people, is presented with a second humble pie by Mr Gladstone in his waiters outfit. This relates to the dispute between Britain and the US over the San Juan boundary with Canada. The Emperor of Germany had been selected as the arbitrator and he had declared in Americas favour as he believed that this was in strict accordance with the Treaty signed between Britain and the US on the 15th June 1846 and which settled the Oregon boundary with Canada. The first helping of humble pie was served to John Bull when the representatives of a number of foreign powers had met in Geneva to settle the long running dispute of the Alabama Claims. Again, the claim was settled in Americas favour. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 9, 1872

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Humble Pie, 1872" captures a significant moment in British-American relations during the late 19th century. In this satirical artwork by Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, Mr Bull, symbolizing the British people, is served a second helping of humble pie by Mr Gladstone, who appears as a waiter. The scene represents the dispute between Britain and the United States over the San Juan boundary with Canada. At that time, Germany's Emperor had been chosen as an arbitrator and ruled in favor of America based on the Treaty signed between Britain and the US in 1846 regarding the Oregon boundary settlement with Canada. This decision came after another serving of humble pie for Britain when foreign powers settled Alabama Claims against them. The image reflects political tensions surrounding foreign policy and territorial disputes during this era. It highlights how Britain was repeatedly humbled on international platforms due to their conflicts with America. The cartoonist uses symbolism such as ships representing naval power and allegorical figures like John Bull to convey these complex diplomatic issues. This engraving serves as a historical artifact depicting important events that shaped international relations at that time. It showcases William Ewart Gladstone playing a prominent role in these negotiations while also shedding light on broader themes such as war, transportation, and national identity.
